Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 18, 2026
BoxOfficeLoco is a project of Veterans for Peace. It exists to raise awareness by comparing Hollywood on-screen kill counts to real-world war casualties. We collect very little about you, we run no advertising or tracking, and we never sell your data. This policy explains what we do collect and why.
1. Information We Collect
Most of the site — the kill-count data, comparisons and timeline — can be used without giving us any personal information. We only collect:
- Account information, and only if you choose to create an account: your email address, name, and a password (which we store only as a secure one-way hash, never in plain text).
- Your cookie choice, stored in your browser so we do not ask again.
- Standard server logs kept by our web server (such as IP address, browser type and page requested), used for security and to keep the site running. These are ordinary technical logs, not a profile of you.
The movie and conflict figures shown on the site are public reference data (see our Terms for sources); they are not information about you.
2. How We Use Your Information
- To provide the site and, if you have an account, to keep you signed in and secure.
- To keep the site running reliably and protect it from abuse.
- To respond to you if you get in touch.
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell, rent, or share it with third parties for their own marketing.
3. Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored on our server. Passwords are hashed with a modern algorithm (bcrypt) and never stored in readable form. We apply reasonable, industry-standard security measures, but no method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
4. Third-Party Services
To build the site we use a small number of outside services:
- OMDb API — a movie database we query to fetch film details (title, year, runtime, etc.). We send film identifiers, never your personal information.
- Our web host and SSL provider (Let's Encrypt) — to serve the site securely.
We do not integrate advertising networks, third-party analytics, social-media trackers, or a payment processor on this site.
5. Cookies
We set only essential cookies (a sign-in session if you have an account, a security token, and your cookie-banner choice), and we load no analytics today. For the full detail, see our Cookie Policy.
6. Your Rights
If you have an account, you can ask us to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you;
- Correct anything inaccurate;
- Delete your account and its associated data.
Email us at info@boxofficeloco.org and we will act on your request.
7. Children's Privacy
BoxOfficeLoco is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us information, email us at info@boxofficeloco.org and we will remove it.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post any changes on this page and update the "Last updated" date above.
9. Contact Us
If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or your data, email us at info@boxofficeloco.org and we will respond.
